Now President Chirac
of France says he supports the progressive abolition of agricultural products' exports subsidies. There seems to be considerable international agreement on this point at the moment - at least in theory. Export subsidies are of course only a part of the $300bn a year agricultural subsidies scam but if they really were eliminated it would be a big step forward.
President Chirac claims that such subsidies "have been cut by 90 percent in past 10 years (forgive me - I must have nodded off to sleep when it happened) . We must go further," said Chirac on the eve of the 28th Salon of Agriculture, France's annual farm products exposition, which opened today and will last one week.
