Europe subsides under subsidies

You couldn't make it up. Here is the European Union, mired in economic stagnation, desperately in need of a greater share of the emerging new technologies and what is its overriding priority now? It is to get Britain to pay a bigger contribution in subsidies to keep antiquated European farming - and disproportionately, that means French farmers - from adjusting to the imperatives of the 21st century. President Chirac of France is trying to make it a test of Britain's commitment to Europe to help keep French farmers afloat.
Don't be deceved by the fact that practically every other member of the EU wants Britain to incease her contributions. Of course they do because it means existing EU members will pay less and aspirant ones can look forward to more goodies when they join. There are two classes of people that like gravy trains: those already on and those waiting to board.

What should be done? At present Britain still pays more than her fair share of contributions into an economically corrupt CAP which pays farmers to grow crops that could and should be done by developing countries. Prime Minister
Blair should offer to raise UK contributions as an altruistic gesture as long as there is a short timetable to phase them out completely. This would help east European countries as well. If EU barriers are dismantled they will have access to EU markets on the basis of an equal playing field. That would be a huge competitive advantage to them compared with the state of affairs now.
